Hardness and Scratch Resistance
Here is where soapstone's personality becomes polarizing.
Soapstone is soft - 1-2 on the Mohs hardness scale. A fingernail (2.5 Mohs) can scratch it. Knives, pots, and daily kitchen use will mark the surface. Over time, soapstone develops a network of fine scratches and wear marks.
