1Gather Your Tools
You'll need:
- Tape measure (at least 25 ft)
- Paper and pencil
- Straight edge or level
- Calculator (or phone)
- Helper (highly recommended)
2Measure Countertop Length
- 1.
Measure along the wall
Start from the wall or backsplash and measure to the front edge of the countertop. Measure in inches.
- 2.
Measure multiple points
Walls aren't always straight. Measure at the left, center, and right, then use the longest measurement.
- 3.
Account for appliances
If there's a range, refrigerator, or dishwasher, measure the full span including the gap needed.
Pro Tip
Always round UP to the nearest 1/4 inch. It's better to have a little extra material than to come up short.
3Measure Countertop Depth
Standard countertop depth is 25-1/2" (from wall to front edge). But verify:
- Measure from the wall to the front edge of the existing countertop
- Include any overhang (typically 1-1/4" to 1-1/2")
- Measure at multiple points - front and back may differ
4Measure Islands & Peninsulas
For kitchen islands or peninsulas (connected to cabinets on one side):
- Measure all exposed sides (not against the wall)
- Add a 4" overhang on exposed sides (standard)
- Specify which sides need the finished edge
5Document Cutouts & Features
Note the following for each cutout:
- Sink cutout - Measure the hole, not the sink itself. Note if it's undermount or drop-in.
- Cooktop cutout - Measure the cutout dimensions from the manufacturer's specs.
- Faucet holes - Note the number and placement (center-set, single-hole, or widespread).
- Outlets & switches - Note locations on the backsplash.
6Sketch Your Layout
Draw a simple top-down view of your kitchen:
- Show walls as lines, cabinets as rectangles
- Mark each section with your measurements
- Indicate which edges should be finished
- Note direction of any veining if you have a pattern

Frequently Asked Questions
Should I remove my old countertops before measuring?
No, measure over your existing countertops. The fabricator will account for removal.
What if my walls aren't straight?
Measure at several points (every 2-3 feet) and use the longest measurement. The fabricator will make templates on-site.
Do I need to measure for backsplash?
Measure the wall area above your countertops. Standard backsplash is 4" high, but full-height options are available.
What about seams?
The fabricator will determine seam placement based on your layout and slab size. Note if you have a pattern that needs to match.
Can I just give my floor plan to the fabricator?
Floor plans aren't accurate enough. Countertop measurements must be taken on-site by a professional or by you following this guide.
